I just had to contribute my take on this discussion... I routinely only eat one meal per day, in the evening. This is not a deliberate or disciplined approach to diet, simply because I do not become hungry. There are some rare days that I will become somewhat hungry for whatever reason prompting me to consume a small portion of healthy such as raw veggies and this quenches the hunger. I believe the body will dictate when to eat and that is my compass so to speak. Actually, I don't even think about eating other meals during the day, but enjoy the meal in the evening with the family. I've done this for many years. I never worked a great deal of manual labor resulting in the burning of lots of calories and I feel my body did not need the “refueling.” Simply my humble opinion, but I think too many people eat out of habit, boredom or due to other unhealthy issues, not because the body needs nourishment; hence so many overweight adults and children!

It depends on the individual. Whether you eat one meal with your 1500 calories, or 5-6 times a day. In my culture we were raised to have 2 meals a day. Morning and night, sometimes even once a day depending on your activities. I weighed a lot less back then. Moving to America where 3 square meals a day is the norm, I can see why it's hard for some people to adapt to the 1 meal a day physically. Like everything else, you get used to it. I must say I did weigh a lot less back home than I do in America :P

Everyone cannot do a 1 meal per day diet..everyones body is not the same. If I tried this 1 meal per day diet I would feel very faint..my blood sugar would drop.I HAVE to eat atleast 2 to 3 meals with 2 healthy snacks and between. I exercise and I still lost alot of weight. I guess im just lucky cause sometimes I will eat fast food like 2 days out a week..I excercise alot though and I don't eat after nine. I will never starve myself, cause I love myself too much to do so..

I think comparing an eating disorder to eating once a day is beyond crazy.. An ED is a psychological disorder, and the weight is just the symptom.. And if you have suffered from an ED, you should know the difference...

Also, it's clear that many of you haven't educated yourselves on nutrition, besides the American mainstream(ie:6 meals a day, your body will go into starvation mode, it will burn muscle before fat, breakfast is the most important meal of the day and ect)... The only reason you can put the weight back on right after a crash diet is because you go back to exactly how you were eating before the need to rapidly loose weight!.. The first time I realized this is when I went through a break up I lost 30 pounds in a month or so, from having no desire to eat. After I started to get back to normal, I ate, but the weight didn't come back at an extreme rate, and 2 years later it still has not.. This got me thinking outside of the box and i started doing my own research and everything you've heard about nutrition, is pretty much BS.

Another is, why would your body first eat the muscle for energy before the stored fat? Didn't it store the fat for energy? Yes, so the NON essential fat is the first to go in times of caloric restriction. This seams like a no brainer to me.

And 24 hours will not put your body into starvation mode, this is hilarious... I don't think that people give the complexity of the human body the credit it deserves! 24 hours? Starvation? I don't think so, it just seems logical that if this were the case our poor little race would have withered away thousands of years ago.

If I were you who are so adamant about the negative side effects of eating one meal a day or, Intermittent Fasting, I would do your research before you spout of such so sure of yourself remarks. They scream ignorance... Also, another thing I would look into, is the eating patterns of other countries. You will find that they are not so similar to what the American mainstream has been shoving down your throat all these years..

There is a big difference between health and weight loss. While eating various small meals throughout the day and consistent exercise will give most people a leaner body, it says nothing about their actual health. BMI in general can provide a good means of health, but even that does not take body fat vs lean body mass into consideration, which is why very muscular people technically are overweight/obese. Caloric restriction and intermittent fasting both involve a decrease in caloric intake, which is favorable, and have a large number of health benefits including increased resistance to oxidative damage and is the only reproducible and scientifically available way to significantly increase life span by up to 40% in organisms ranging from yeast to Rhesus monkeys (basically our closest living species relative).

A lot of people already take a multivitamin as it is. Coupled with intermittent fasting or caloric restriction it can cause decreases in LDL, increases in HDL, decreases in triglyceride levels, lower body fat, and ultimately increased longevity. Longevity would seem to a very good indicator of health.

A great example of how a reduction in calories is the most important factor in weight loss can be found in this article: http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/11/08/twinkie.diet.professor/index.html

I wouldn't recommend eating once a day to many people, mostly because it requires a lot of discipline. Also, it requires a deep understanding that you are technically decreasing your metabolic rate, which is where the increase in longevity comes from. Should someone ever want to do it in the short term, they will loose weight but have to be sure to understand that if they return to a regular 3 or "fad" 6+ meals a day they must make sure to control their caloric intake just as carefully or they will go back to the same weight. I'm a medical school student and I have been eating ABOUT once a day for over a year and a half. I mean about because sometimes I go out to dinner or have a bowl of cereal for breakfast, but 90% of the time I just eat a big, hearty lunch. I'm at a healthy weight range, I look and feel great and my doctor agrees.

I eat once a day in a sense. I concentrate on getting one balanced meal a day and sometimes, if I am really hungry, I will eat twice. I try to focus on eating healthy foods like fruit and vegetables and protein. I snack at times - chocolate, nuts, maybe crackers, fruit, or yogurt. I call it the common sense diet. It regulates my calories. If I eat 3 meals or 5-6 meals a day, it won't be just one meatball and 2 slices of tomato people. I tried eating 5 small meals a day, but once i had a plate and fork and some pots of food, i just went to town, so I had to stop eating like that. I like to sit down and eat and I can't be counting weighing and measuring all day - it is too much on me mentally. So I just eat one rounded meal a day and then some light snacking here and there. I also try to be hungry once in a day - I have lost weight doing this and it is an easy lifestyle choice.
In terms of metabolism, I wonder if it is just a theory and not a fact. Common sense - starvation leads to weight loss. The diet and exercise market with all their hypes and gimmicks are just out to make a buck - how about not eating people and going out and having fun. Why do we have to buy all their books and equipment and trainers - what if we just stop eating so much. If these diet gurus were so smart, instead of telling people to eat 5-6 small meals a day - they should tell them to eat 1 or 2 healthy meals a day with a few snacks. It's all how you word it.
