Having a sweet tooth can trigger the urge to eat desserts that aren't so good for you. I have a weakness for desserts and I like eating them after dinner. Luckily, I am not picky about what type of dessert I eat, as long as it satisfies my sweet tooth.
Depending on how strict you are with your eating habits, you may allow yourself one small dessert after a meal such as a small piece of chocolate. However, some people can't handle eating such a small portion and will be tempted. If that is the case for you, it is probably a good idea to keep certain foods stocked so that you can fight the dessert cravings with much better alternatives.

The list below are just ideas and all of them may not fit into your eating plan but they are things that may help when the sugar cravings are just too strong.
- Keep berries (strawberries, bluberries, etc.) in stock when in season
- Plain, low fat yogurt (easy to mix with fruit)
- Cottage cheese (also to mix with fruit)
- Always have some fruit in the fridge
- Jello (sugar free)
- Pudding (sugar free)
- Frozen fruit bars (natural)
- Fruit smoothies
Eating fruit has done wonders for my sugar cravings. My favorite is cottage cheese with any type of berries. It is filling and sweet enough to be a good dessert.
What do you do when the dessert cravings attack?

How do sugar-free alternatives qualify as eating clean? Don’t they use artificial sweeteners, which are not whole or natural foods?
You are absolutely right which is why I stated not everything on the list would apply to everyone’s eating plan. Some people may not be as strict when it comes to the artificial sweeteners. They are alternatives though and may be better than giving into the wrong foods.
I absolutely love frozen grapes when a late evening sweet tooth hits. But in a pinch any fresh fruit works wonders.
Frozen grapes are so good, especially in the summer. They make a really good snack.
I take a half tablespoon of natural peanut butter and 1/4 cup of Fiber One (original only it has no sugar) and nuke them for 15 seconds and mix them together. It tastes like a nutter butter cookie, you get a ton of fiber, healthy fat, and little protein if you eat a peanut butter enhanced with egg whites. Delicious and guilt free!
I mix 1/2 cup plain, low-fat yogurt with about 2 Tbsp. of a nut butter (peanut, cashew, almond, whichever is your favourite) and I use this as a “dip” for sliced apples. It tastes delicious, is good for me and definitely satisfies my sweet tooth.
Fruit does the trick! I agree, it has done a wonder for my sugar cravings. I used to have pie, cake, or icecream almost every day (really sad, I know). After dinner now, I’ll have a nectarine, some blueberries, or an apple.
Also, I found that if the blueberries (or any other berries) aren’t ripe enough, I just drizzle some agave nectar onto them and they taste great!
Frozen blueberries are the best! I buy them in the summer when they are in season and less expensive. (In Oregon, I could pick them for under $1/pound sometimes!!) All you have to do is pop them in the fridge. Eating them is like having a mini-popsicle in terms of taste and texture.
I love pudding with a TBSP of nut butter. Delightful! Another great idea is fresh apples with 3/4 c. steel cut oats, 1/4c. raisins, 2 spritzs’ of olive oil, and a 2 TBSP of sucanat. Bake them all at 350 for 20 minutes and enjoy. Lots of fiber, sweet tooth satisfied, and no guilt for raiding the fridge.
