What’s the Best Thing to Eat Before a Workout?

Some people prefer to workout on an empty stomach but it can be tough to work out when you have no energy. I personally rather have a small meal in my stomach before I workout but what are the right things to eat so that you get the most benefit?

Eat Your Carbs

It's ideal to eat at least 1 hour before your workout. Eating carbohydrates will provide the energy that you'll need but it's important not to eat just any carbs. The best carbs to eat are the complex ones that are high in fiber like whole grains, fruits and vegetables.

Foods high in protein and fat don't digest as quickly as a small meal of complex carbohydrates. However, a meal with both protein and complex carbs is ideal post-workout in order to repair damaged muscles.

Also make sure your meal is small. The last thing you want is a cramp during your workout.

I wake up at 4 am to do cardio for 2 hours everyday, and my favorite pre-workout meal is a packet of regular instant oatmeal made with low-fat milk and 1/4 cup of blueberries. It’s easy, quick, sustaining and filling. Then for a post-workout meal, I make myself an omelet with 1 scrambled egg, chopped tomato, onion, jalapeno, cilantro, seasoned with garlic pepper and a thin slice of grilled turkey. I’ll eat that with a slice of whole grain bread and red salsa, and it’s sooo delicious! So in a sense I eat two breakfasts, but when I do, I notice I don’t experience any cravings or hunger whatsoever throughout the whole day which really helps with my weight loss goals. Good article…

Thanks for sharing that. Your meals and when you eat them are a good example of fueling up for your workout and the rest of the day.

No Cereal, or yogurt! stay away from dairy products before working out. They will strongly dehydrate you.
